Internationaler Besuch

Am 6.6. durften wir als Partnerschule der PH-NÖ einer internationalen Delegation unsere Schule als stellvertretendes Beispiel für das österreichische Schulsystem präsentieren. Dies machte die 3f in gewohnt perfekter Manier. In selbstgeschriebenen Dialogen präsentierten sie die Vorzüge unserer Schule in perfektem Englisch und präsentierten sogar ein eigens dafür gebautes Modell der Schule. Nochmals danke den Schüler/innen und den Kolleginnen Eichberger Ingrid und Kern Eva, die das mit den Schüler/innen in Ihrem Unterricht einstudierten. Aufgelockert wurde die Präsentation durch musikalische Darbietungen unter der Leitung von Andreas Pirringer. Wir ernteten von den Gästen, die aus Amerika und Europa kamen großes Lob.
Erfreulich war auch, dass Vertreter der Stadt, Vizebürgermeister Dr. Christian Stocker und Stadtrat Horst Karas, unsere Bezirksschulinspektorin Christine Pollak, Hr. Anton Urban als Vertreter der Wiener Neustädter Sparkasse und Fr. Petra Hofstättner unsere Elternobfrau anwesend waren.
Ein vorzügliches Buffet, organisiert von Fr. Elke Fasching und Peri Glaser, rundete die gelungene Veranstaltung ab.

4def in Scotland

From 1st to 8th June the fourth-year classes enjoyed the fine Scottish weather up in Edinburgh (Edinburra - don't forget to roll those Rs!), where they are having English lessons at the Mackenzie School of English.
Everyone settled in very quickly and we all enjoyed a beautiful Sunday at St Andrews, including (for some very brave ones) a swim in the almost tropical waters of the North Sea.
Monday afternoon was spent with a "getting-to-know-Edinburra" activity. The pupils followed a route along Princes Street, up to the Castle, down the Royal Mile and across Northbridge back to their starting point, answering questions and photographing specific sights on the way.
On Tuesday morning Mr King took a stroll through Edinburgh with his camera. Here are a few impressions of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Tuesday afternoon was taken up with some shopping (what a surprise) and then a visit to the Camera Obscura, home to all sorts of optical illusions. After "tea" we all met up again for a Ceilidh (Scottish dancing), which everyone enjoyed far more than they had expected.
On Thursday we took a tour bus through the town and got off at Dynamic Earth to walk up Arthur's Seat. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. Although it was a hard climb for some (or so they claimed) everyone agreed that the view from the top was worth all the hard work.
The icing on the cake for the teachers was a beautiful sunset as they walked home from having their 'tea'.
Friday was the last full day in Edinburgh, with lessons in the morning and a visit to the beach at Portobello in the afternoon. Just as we left the beach the sun came out…

Vocal Coaching – Mag. Antonia Schmid

Am vergangenen Dienstag, 7. Mai, war Mag. Antonia Schmid vom BORG Wr. Neustadt an der Bilingualen Schule zu Gast. Die Chor und Bandkinder verbesserten ihr Körper- & Rhythmusgefühl und schulten durch Aufwärm- und Stimmpflegeübungen ihre Stimmbänder. Mehrstimmige Lieder kombiniert mit Tanzschritten und rhythmischen Übungen wurden bravourös gemeistert.
Der Liederreigen spannte sich von englischsprachigen Songs, über das österreichische Volkslied, bis hin zur Weltmusik mit Songs aus Namibia und Indianer-Gesängen aus Nordamerika.
Dank an den Elternverein der Schule für die Finanzierung dieses Workshops!

Wiener Neustadt District Swimming Championships

On Wednesday 10th April eleven pupils from the second-year classes went with Mrs Wöckl and Mrs Rasinger to the Aqua Nova pool to take part in the Wiener Neustadt Stadt District Swimming Championships. After an excellent performance they secured fourth place.

2def at the airport

On Monday 6th May the second-year classes went to Vienna International Airport for a guided tour. We were picked up by a special airport bus and once we had gone through the (very strict) security checkpoint we were driven around the inside of the airport, making it possible to see the planes being refuelled, unloaded/loaded and made ready for the next flight. We also had a peek inside the biggest hanger at Schwechat, where the planes are maintained. The doors are so big that in winter it costs €1000 every time they are opened, because then all the warm air escapes and the hangar has to be heated again!

4f sport and reading night

On Wednesday 15th April 4f spent a busy night at school with Mrs Wöckl and Mr King. After a couple of hours of sports in the gym, including a battle of the sexes with various different tasks including limbo, asault course, text message race and frozen T-shirt competition we enjoyed a nice meal in the kitchen. (Thanks to all the parents who prepared tasty dishes for us.) The rest of the evening was spent reading and then the class slept in the gymnastic room. The following morning Mrs Wöckl prepared her famous healthy breakfast, so everyone had a good start in the new day.

Living history

This year the school's motto is "creativity and innovation@school" and two pupils in 3d (Chiara Gerstmayer and Sarah Helnwein) have taken this to heart and produced a video about what they have been learning in History - namely the lives of Native Americans. What better way to learn than by trying something out for yourself?

Eine bewegte Musikstunde

Bewegungserziehung unter professioneller Anleitung, genossen die ersten Klassen unter der Leitung von Tanzleiterin Gabriele Wiessner. Die Schüler und Schülerinnen bewegten sich zu Samba, lernten den österreichischen 6er Schritt und tanzten zu „Goldies“, wie Hits von Dschingis Khan und der Saragossa Band.

English Olympics in Bad Erlach

On Wednesday 3rd April four pupils from the fourth year represented the Bilingual Junior High School at the "English Olympics" in Bad Erlach. Sara Savic (4d), Katja Leyrer (4e), Lisa Filz and Bianca Fellner (4f) did their very best, which turned out to be good enough to take first place. (Actually, we were quietly confident that they would win, but what else would you expect from such excellent pupils?) The team is now eligible to take part in the Lower Austrian finals in Zwentendorf on 13th June. We wish them every success!

4e's St Patrick's Night

On 13th March 4e celebrated St Patrick's Day (okay, it wasn't the exact date, but close enough) with an overnight in their classroom. Each pupil was given a role to play and he or she had to stay in that role for as long as possible. Easier said than done in some cases... I don't think anyone really slept all that well - our beds at home are a little more comfortable after all. The next morning a rather tired class managed to make a pretty decent English breakfast under the guidance of Mrs Schneidhofer and Mr King.

Rhythmus aus der Schultasche - Workshop mit Dr. Richard Filz

Passend zum Jahresthema "Innovation und Kreativität in der Schule" trommelten vergangene Woche begeisterte SchülerInnen der Bilingual Junior High School auf Heften und Büchern unter der Leitung des Referenten Dr. Richard Filz. Rhythmisches Gruppen- & Klassenmusizieren mit Buch, Heft, Papier, Lineal, Radiergummi, Münzen und Stift begeisterte nicht nur die SchülerInnen, sondern auch Chor & BandleiterInnen Andreas Pirringer und Andrea Huber.
Ein Dankeschön an den Elternverein für eine finanzielle Unterstützung des Workhops.

BJHS Band and Choir

The school band and choir made a fine job of their performance at the Bezirksjugendsingen at the theatre in Wiener Neustadt on Wednesday 6th March. Of the nine schools who took part they were the only group who performed a self-composed song and their version of Kings of the World from the musical Romeo and Juliet was equally impressive. Many thanks to Mr Andreas Pirringer and Mrs Andrea Huber, without whose dedication and patience such a brilliant performance would not have been possible. Both the children and the teachers have done us all proud and we look forward to future performances.

Wintersport week at Frauenalpe

The second-year classes spent the week of 18th-22nd February at Frauenalpe, near Murau. Though there wasn't an awful lot of sunshine everyone had a great time improving their skiing or snowboarding technique. In the evening there were various activities organised by the teacher-team to keep everyone occupied, so no-one really had time to get homesick, though they probably all missed having normal lessons and doing homework. Still, now they can sleep soundly in the knowledge that school starts again for them on Monday…

Comenius kauft uns Musiksoftware

Musiklehrer Andreas Pirringer bedankt sich im Namen der Bilingualen Schule Wr. Neustadt bei seiner Kollegin, Frau Marianne Schneidhofer, welche durch Budgetmittel des Comenius-Programms und einen Zuschuss des Elternvereins, den Ankauf einer Kompositionssoftware für 25 PC-Plätze an der Schule ermöglichte. Die SchülerInnen der 3. und 4. Klassen haben bereits ansprechende Musikstücke damit komponiert. Hörproben davon werden bei den heurigen „Bilingual Presentations“ an der Schule Ende Juni vorgestellt.

Shrove Tuesday

As usual, Shrove Tuesday (Faschingsdienstag) was an opportunity for the pupils to join a group activity in or outside of school. A total of six groups were out and about while one group invaded the school kitchen to make pancakes.

The skiers and snowboarders went to Semmering for a morning on the slopes. Fresh snow and reasonable weather were a great combination and everyone made it back without injury.

Meanwhile a group of musically-minded pupils took a pleasant stroll through Wiener Neustadt's wintery streets with Mr Pirringer and Mrs Dopplinger and ended up at the Bösendorfer piano factory, where they enjoyed a very informative tour of the production facilities. Though one or two of pupils would have liked to, no-one actually bought a grand piano. Probably because they are rather heavy to carry and they had to walk all the way back to school through the snow.

Ein Name für die Schule!

Das wunderschöne Schulgebäude in der Pottendorferstraße, in dem die Bilingual Junior High School beheimatet ist, hatte bisher einen Fehler. Es war nicht erkennbar, welche Schule sich in dem Gebäude verbirgt. Der Gebäudename, Dr. Hertha Firnberg Hauptschule wird leider dem Schulprofil nicht gerecht und ist zudem auch nicht der wirkliche Schulname unter dem die Bildungseinrichtung beim Landesschulrat registriert ist. Jetzt prangt in großen Lettern "Bilingual Junior High School" auf den Fenstern im 2. Geschoß. Nun ist jedem klar, welche Schule sich in dem Gebäude befindet.
Zu verdanken ist dies der Initiative von Elternobfrau Petra Hofstättner und Sozialombudsmann der Stadt Wiener Neustadt Mag.(FH) Erich Fenninger. Nach mehrmaligen, wenig erfolgreichen Interventionen beim Schulerhalter wurde diese Beklebung kurzer Hand aus dem Etat des Elternvereins finanziert und so der Stadt Wiener Neustadt und vor allem Schüler/innen, Lehrer/innen und Eltern ein lange gehegter Wunsch erfüllt. Auch wenn es in absehbarer Zeit nochmals eine Änderung an der Fassade geben wird, weil die BJHS ab Herbst keine Hauptschule mehr sein wird, sondern auch den Status Neue Niederösterreichische Mittelschule erhält, ist vorerst einmal die Identität des jüngsten Schulgebäudes der Stadt für alle sichtbar geklärt.

Vorweihnachtlicher Besuch der 2. Klasse der VS Sta. Christiana

Weihnachtliche Stimmung kam auf, als uns die Schüler der zweiten Klasse der VS Sta. Christiana besuchten und uns mit Liedern und Gedichten erfreuten. Anschließend lasen wir den jüngeren Schülern Adventgeschichten vor und stärkten uns bei einer kleinen Jause. Schnell wurden Freundschaften geschlossen. Besonders freute uns, als ein Bub rief: "Nächstes Jahr kommen wir wieder!" (Lisa Kienbink, 3F-Klasse)

Flash Mob in Wiener Neustadt

On the first day of the Christmas holidays a large number of pupils from the Bilingual Junior High School met in the Town Square in Wiener Neustadt to take part in the school's Christmas Flash Mob. At exactly 11 o'clock the music started and the not-so-secret flash mob began. The idea of Mrs and Miss Schneidhofer, it was helped to fruition by our friendly hip-hop coach, Alexander Albrecht, who not only provided the music and choreography for the dance, but also came to school several times to teach it to the children. Thank you very much, Alex!

First aid course

Recently all three fourth-year classes took part in a first aid course. Under the watchful eye of Michael Dorfstätter, a member of the Austrian Red Cross (and also a teacher) they learnt all about how to give first aid in various different emergency situations. The qualification is the same one as that needed for a driving licence.
The course was very well-received and everyone managed to reach the required level. Many thanks to the Red Cross and Mr Dorfstätter for this great opportunity!

Und aus der Sicht eines Schülers (Christoph Astleitner):
Nach anfänglichen Lachkrämpfen und vielem Gekichere, begann der 4D die Erstehilfe (First aid = ungoogled) gewisse Begeisterung zu Verursachen. Nicht nur die "stabile Seitenlage", im Englischen "recovery position", wurde geübt, sondern auch was zu tun ist wenn jemand eine Kopfverletzung hat, was im Schulalltag vom zuvielen Lernen schon mal vorkommen kann. Alles in allem war der Erstehilfekurs nicht nur lehrreich sondern auch wahnsinnig witzig, z.B. als Sandro einen Ganzkörperverband bekam. Desweiteren war der Kurs ein voller Erfolg und alle, auch Saul unser neuer Schüler aus Spanien, welcher begeistert mitmachte, bestanden den Kurs ohne Schwierigkeiten.
It was a great event in the 4D class.

"Weihnachten im Schuhkarton"

Once again pupils form the BJHS took part in the Weihnachten im Schuhkarton appeal and filled shoe-boxes with gifts such as chocolate, soap, tooth paste and toothbrush, clothes (woolen cap, gloves, etc) small soft toys, games, pencils, sharpener, exercise books, etc. These boxes are then carried to Eastern Europe in lorries.
Volunteers (from Austria) "accompany" the boxes and give them to really poor childen at meeting points such as schools or town halls. (There is also a DVD that shows last year's Christmas, so that the kids know that their parcels arrived safely.)

Weihnachtspackerlaktion

Auch heuer haben sich unsere Schüler mit ihren Klassenvorständen und Lehrern bereit erklärt bei der Weihnachtspackerlaktion der ADRA "kids for kids" - Kinder helfen Kinder - mitzumachen. In Soziales Lernen wurde auf die bittere Armut vieler Kinder hingewiesen.
Da wir uns auch schon in den Vorjahren an dieser internationalen Hilfsaktion beteiligt hatten, wurden wir heuer durch Bilder, Filme und Berichte vom Vorjahr und durch die glänzenden Kinderaugen bei der Verteilung zusätzlich motiviert.

Hiphop in the gym

On 27th an 28th November pupils from the third and fourth years tried their hand at hiphop dancing in trial lessons with Alex Albrecht from Tanzschule Kummer in Wiener Neustadt. After an hour of pretty intensive dancing even some of the boys were willing to admit that they had actually quite enjoyed it! All the involved pupils have received information about courses and feedback has been very positive.

A wet weekend in Venice

On 11th November pupils and teachers from the BJHS took part in the annual MOV Orienteering Competition in Venice. What is already a very challenging event was given an additional twist by the high water level - most of Venice was under water! This didn't prevent our team from getting some excellent results, though.

Siegerehrung Comenius-Logo

35 Kinder haben am Logowettbewerb zum Comenius-Projekt teilgenommen. Die Entwürfe von sechs Schüler/innen wurden ausgewählt und im Oktober in Kopenhagen der "internationalen" Jury präsentiert. Dort wurde aber ein Entwurf aus Frankreich prämiert.
Unsere Schulsieger heißen: Christoph Vappetic (3e) und Emma Clement (3D). Sie dürfen an einem der nächsten Treffen in Italien, Spanien oder Belgien teilnehmen.

Die 4. Klassen der First Bilingual Primary School zu Gast in der Bili

Schulführung, Fragestunde und Unterrichtsbesuche standen am Programm. Wir hoffen, dass wir einige der Kids am Tag der offenen Tür begrüßen dürfen und dass letztlich dann auch viele "Pestalozzis" unsere Erstklässler im Schuljahr 2013/14 sein werden!

Making a dream come true for the Mary Ward High School in Nepal

Kollegin Alexandra Schmid weilt zur Zeit in Nepal und unterrichtet dort an der Mary Ward High School in der Nähe von Kathmandu. Ihre Berichte und Schilderungen veranlassten uns dazu, eine Sammelaktion für diese Schule durchzuführen. Der Luxus in puncto Ausstattung und Materialien, der unseren Schüler/innen im Haus geboten wird, ist für die Schule dieser Einrichtung in Nepal nur ein Traum. Gemäß dem heurigen Jahresmotto „Create your dream“ wollen wir diesen Kindern einen Traum Wirklichkeit werden lassen.
Eine Woche lang wurden in der Pause Butterbrot und Äpfel an die Schüler/innen verteilt. Sie spendeten dafür einen Teil ihres Taschengeldes. Auch die Lehrer haben beschlossen anstatt der Weihnachtsgeschenke im Lehrerzimmer einen Betrag zu spenden. So kamen in dieser Woche 850.- € zusammen, die nun nach Nepal überwiesen werden.
Ich möchte mich als Schulleiter bei allen Schüler/innen und bei den Kollegen/innen bedanken, die hier mit großer Hilfsbereitschaft für einen Teil der Kinder einen „Traum“ wahr werden lassen können. Ganz besonderer Dank gilt der Firma Linnauer, die uns das Brot spendete und dem Schulpartner der Sparkasse Wiener Neustadt, die für den Transfer der Spendensumme nach Nepal sorgt.

Empty Flags erobern BJHS

Empty Flags wollten sich für die zahlreichen Unterstützungen bei den Schüler/innen der BJHS bedanken. Daher kam es am Dienstag, 30.10. zum "Meet & Greet" in der Schule. Leider konnten nur Alex (Bassist) und Greg (Sänger), kommen, da die anderen beiden Emptys, Joe (Gitarrist) und Brendan (Drummer), verhindert waren. Alle Kinder waren in der Aula versammelt und stellten zuerst Fragen, die die beiden "Stars" mit viel Geduld und Freude beantworteten. Es ging in erster Linie um die Geschichte der Band, die Erfahrungen und Erwartungen bei der ORF-Show Die Große Chance und die Freundschaft innerhalb der Band. Auch Sido war ein Thema, wobei sie sich kein Urteil abringen ließen.
Danach gaben die beiden vier Songs zum Besten. Es waren dies On the Edge (aus der ersten Casting–Show), Turn it off (ein ganz neuer Song), Teenage Dream (Cover von Katy Perry) und als Zugabe Until I Die (Halbfinal–Song).
Natürlich wurden im Anschluss auch noch Autogrammwünsche erfüllt und die beiden haben versprochen für jedes Kind eine Autogrammkarte nachzuliefern, da diese noch nicht geliefert waren.
Es war eine tolle Aktion, wenngleich die Band sich dabei erhofft auf die Unterstützung der Bilis im Finale am 9.11. zählen zu dürfen.

Red Nose Run

Friday 26th October was Red Nose Day once again and, as usual there was a charity run in the Academy Park in Wiener Naustadt. Pupils, parents and friends of the BJHS managed to walk, run, and nordic walk a total of 500 km and won 1st place! It was a great competition although it was neither warm nor cosy, but quite fresh. Many thanks to all those who took part in raising money for such a good cause.

2def in Schwarzenbach

On 25th October the second-year classes went on a history trip to Schwarzenbach to see the open-air museum, where houses of the Celts have been reconstructed.The kids worked with clay, baked flat bread on an open fire, did some archery and stormed the border rampard - which still exists - of the celtic village. Andrea, our guide, gave the children information about the Celtic lifestyle and some more background information.

Tiger - Ente - Bär, Janosch und viel mehr!

Gab es für die 1d+1f-Klassen am 22.10.2012 im Kremser Karikaturmuseum. Eingestimmt und vorbereitet auf diese Ausstellung von Zeichnungen und Büchern haben sich die Kinder schon auf der Busfahrt beim Schmökern in Janosch-Büchern.
Wer Janosch ist, wollen Sie vielleicht wissen? Nein, nicht wirklich! Denn wer Kinder hat, sie zu erziehen und zu lehren versucht, der weiß, dass Janosch ein Meister der Zeichnung, des Witzes und der Sprache ist. Ein Autor für KINDER von 3 bis, ja bis das Augenlicht nachlässt, so ungefähr bis 99!?
Egal, ob der Tiger dem Bären einen Brief mit einer fast Liebeserklärung „Ein kleines Stück von meinem Hemd hab ich hier aufs Papier geklemmt. Es möge dich in Ewigkeiten als Freund durch diese Welt begleiten“ schreibt, oder ob Emil Grünbär lakonisch feststellt „1:0 für beide“, oder ob der Bär dem Tiger eine Ansichtskarte von der Küche ins weit entfernte Wohnzimmer mit den Worten „ Sauschöne Grüße“ denn „Nobody is perfect, but me“ schickt, jedes Mal kann man sich das Schmunzeln und Lachen nicht „verkneifen“.
Doch nicht genug: Als Abschluss erwartete die 1F ein kleiner aber feiner Graphikworkshop und die 1D durfte im Trickfilmworkshop einen Film über Janoschs Figuren drehen.

4f's Mountain Adventure

On Thursday 27th September 4f began their two-day walking trip to the Naturfreundehaus at Knofeleben. At nine in the morning we took the train to Payerbach and followed the red trail up through the Eng to the beautiful new hut. Sheltered from the rain by the trees we slogged our way up the occasionally steep path. Though many of the pupils frequently complained that they would surely die of exhaustion at any moment, everyone made it up to the hut without collapsing.
The afternoon highlight was The Flying Eggs, two of which did actually survive the experience. In the evening Max entertained eveyone with his guitar playing and there was even a short theatre performance. Many thanks to Mrs Wöckl for organising such a memorable trip.

4e walk to Rauhenstein

On Friday 21st September 4e went for a walk from the train station in Baden to Rauhenstein, a ruined castle on the northern side of Helenental. Despite the occasional lack of enthusiasm that became evident on the way (especially when the path was going uphill), the general consensus was that it was better than being stuck in school.

ASKÖ Tag des Sports

Am Freitag 14. September besuchten fast alle Klassen den ASKÖ Tag des Sports am Hauptplatz in Wiener Neustadt. Es gab Infostände von verschiedenen Vereinen und viele Actionpoints, wo die Kinder unterschiedliche Angebote ausprobieren dürften.

The importance of a healthy breakfast...

On Friday 7th September 4f made a healthy breakfast with Mrs Wöckl. We all brought different fruits, teas and many other things. In the morning we went down to the kitchen and prepared the breakfast. We had fruit salad, bread and butter, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber and Mrs Wöckl made a special mix including cereal, cinnamon, apple and lots of other things. There were lots of different teas, without sugar, of course.
Our class had a great time and even learnt a bit about healthy eating.
