The English-Speaking World – Celebrations

As part of this year’s topic, “The English-Speaking World”, we are emphasising the importance of celebrations and feast days. St Patrick’s Day is one of these celebrations and in Music Mr Pirringer introduced the pupils not only to typical Irish music and instruments, but also bagpipes (Highland pipes). While this instrument is more commonly associated with Scotland, these were nevertheless very motivating lessons, with the pupils being given the opportunity to put a set of bagpipes together – no easy task if you have never played them before!
Many of the pupils were quite surprised at how loud a set of bagpipes can be – designed to be played outside in a Scottish glen, they can easily drown out even the noisiest of classes when played indoors!
